It seems like only yesterday that SharePoint 2010 was being rolled out with much excitement over its improvements from SharePoint 2007. Here we are just a few years later and the day we knew would arrive has finally entered that 30 day “window.”
There are four main types of support Microsoft has provided for SharePoint 2010:
- Warranty Issues – any warranty issues raised after October 13 in regards to your warranty terms with Microsoft will no longer be valid
- Incident Support – Microsoft Support will begin charging for all support calls for SharePoint 2010. Typically, if the root cause was determined as a product defect or issue, the support call would be covered under the maintenance agreement.
- Hotfix Support (non-security related)
- Design changes / feature request – no longer will feedback or improvement suggestions be accepted. Microsoft is focusing on its current and future versions of SharePoint.
So, what happens after October 13, 2015 – and how does this impact you?
- Only security hotfixes will be released
- Cumulative updates will cease
- Service Packs will stop
- Public updates will end
- Support changes
While this may seem problematic – it isn’t (not completely). Security hotfixes will still be released, which is one of the top concerns of many SharePoint 2010 Admins and IT Management.
There is a path forward – upgrade to SharePoint 2013 OR hold-out for SharePoint 2016. What we are seeing with many customers using SharePoint as a business critical system is the immediate plan to move into SharePoint 2010. With SharePoint 2016 around the corner we know this can be a bit unnerving to upgrade to a version that will soon be a full version behind – it’s ultimately about the risk, and the timeline it will take to fully upgrade your environment.
Regardless…if you have 2010 we know 2 things:
- Support is changing
- Upgrade plans need to be occurring

Do you have Premier Support?
